Fly Over Media is continuing its annual Extant show with a series building upon year one’s success.

We invite you to the Outlook Project Gallery at Turbine Flats for the following multimedia shows highlighting organizations whose work aligns with Fly Over Media’s mission to support, produce and publish in-depth and multimedia journalism on rural and underrepresented places.

All shows are free to attend, except the September 14 show, Fly Over Media’s Extant. Tickets for Fly Over Media’s Extant will be available soon for $25, or $20 if purchased at any previous Extant show.

Extant: Hear Nebraska

First Friday, July 7, 2017. 5 – 9 p.m. 2124 Y Street, Lincoln, NE.

“Extant: Hear Nebraska” features multimedia work by Hear Nebraska photographer and videographer Lauren Farris.

First Friday speakers include Andrew Dickinson of Fly Over Media and featured artist Lauren Farris of Hear Nebraska. Singer songwriter Kerry Eddy will also perform throughout the evening as the show runs from 5 – 9 p.m.

Alongside Farris’ work, the gallery will host historical Hear Nebraska photos spanning the six years of the non-profit’s coverage and promotion of Nebraska music.

Extant: Global Eyewitness

July 21, 2017. 5 – 9 p.m. 2124 Y Street, Lincoln, NE.

“Extant: Global Eyewitness” features photos, multimedia and reporting by both past and present students in UNL’s Global Eyewitness multimedia journalism program, which travels the world reporting on issues of people in need. The program is one-of-a-kind, and most recently traveled to Uganda for three weeks of reporting this May. The opening reception on July 21 runs from 5 – 9 p.m.

Featured photographers and videographers include, but are not limited to, Jon Augustine, Patrick Breen (Arizona Republic), Kaylee Everly, Calla Kessler (Washington Post), Anna Reed (Salem Statesman Journal), Brianna Soukup (Portland Press Herald), and Morgan Spiehs (Water for Food Institute).

Attendees will hear from UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications professor and Global Eyewitness program leader Bruce Thorson in a short talk. Food and drink will be provided.

Extant: The New Territory

First Friday, August 4, 2017. 5 – 9 p.m. 2124 Y Street, Lincoln, NE.

“Extant: The New Territory” features work by two contributors to the Lower Midwest literary journalism magazine the New Territory. The show presents photo prints from two stories the magazine has recently published and will include a selection of text from the pieces, either mounted with corresponding photographs or presented in a short talk during the opening reception. The opening reception runs from 5 – 9 p.m.

Alongside this New Territory exhibition are textiles from Lincoln’s Rick Fahrenbruch and performances through the night by Lincoln folk musician Hana Zara.

First Friday speakers include The New Territory editor and publisher Tina Casagrand and one New Territory contributor, to be introduced by Fly Over Media executive director Andrew Dickinson.

Extant: Women Photograph

First Friday, August 18, 2017. 5 – 9 p.m. 2124 Y Street, Lincoln, NE.

“Extant: Women Photograph” features work by members of Women Photograph, a resource for female documentary and editorial photographers and the people who would like to hire them. The opening reception August 18 runs from 5 – 9 p.m, and will host curated work from Carolina Hidalgo, Calla Kessler, Erika Larsen, Maddie McGarvey and Alyssa Schukar.

A representative of Women Photograph will give a short talk, as will Fly Over Media’s event and fundraising director Jacob Zlomke, who is the organizer of the Extant series. Food and drink will be provided.

Fly Over Media’s Extant

September 14, 2017. 5 – 9 p.m. 2124 Y Street, Lincoln, NE.

“Fly Over Media’s Extant” is the close of the Extant series and features work by three Fly Over Media contributors created specifically to be published for the first time at this show. The show will run from 5 – 9 p.m. on September 14.

This is a ticketed event ($25, unless purchased at a previous Extant show, then $20) that offers food, drinks, speakers and the premiere of stunning photojournalism produced on rural issues in Nebraska, Colorado and Wisconsin.

This is the first instance of this show, which will also travel to Denver, Colorado, and Madison, Wisconsin, later in 2017.

Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite, and are also available for purchase at any previous Extant show.
